"Surfactant Bleeding" also known as "Surfactant Leaching" is a common problem here in the Pacific Northwest, but it's nothing to be alarmed about. It will not harm the paint job and the problem can be easily be fixed with a quick rinse from a garden hose.

Surfactant Bleeding is most common with darker colors on exterior paint jobs. It occurs from the dampness or fog during the night. It will make the surface look oily and shiny. It can also appear in a bathroom that lacks proper ventilation.

Surfactant Bleed

Spring has arrived in Vancouver Washington!.

I feel it's a waste to paint the front door the same color as the body or trim. Choosing a separate accent color for the front door is important. An accent color to highlight the design or architecture of your home. When someone comes to visit, the front door is a focal point. It's nice to have a color that makes people feel welcome.

Choosing a color

As a child, many girls would dream of getting married and living in a house with a red door. Today, red is probably the most common color on front doors. Red is warm and inviting. Burgundy is another common color. Also popular is black, green and blue. Exteriors with three colors are common. A main color which is referred to as "body color" the trim color, and an accent color for the front door. Choose a color that compliments the body and trim colors. Often the shutters will also be painted the accent color. Most paint suppliers will have free brochure's with 3 color paint schemes. This is a good place to start. Something that goes with the design or architecture of your home. Many people will walk or drive through the neighborhood looking at other front doors.

Painting Aluminum Gutters With DTM

One coat or two? This can be quite confusing with all the commercials these days advertising "One Coat" coverage paint. This is hype, and not true. To achieve the true color, two coats are almost always required. Also, most paint manufacturer's require two coats of paint for the warranty. On exteriors, two coats will provide a much longer lasting job. Up to 50% longer.

A 2nd coat will also take care of any areas that may be light or missed on the first coat. Most the cost of a new paint job is labor. On average, paint is only 10 to 25% of the cost. Also, prep is a big portion of the job. Applying a 2nd coat does not take that much more extra time. When you consider the benefits of a 2nd coat of paint, you are actually saving money. The best value is a two coat paint job. A high quality paint is also recommended.

At Northwest Painting, we always bid our jobs for two coats of premium paint. We have painted exteriors all over the Vancouver and SW Washington area with beautiful and long lasting paint jobs.

If you would like to receive an estimate for interior or exterior painting, call Northwest Painting at 360-225-7427 to schedule an appointment.

Vancouver Wa Deck Refinishing

Northwest Painting recently completed a deck refinishing job in Vancouver Washington.

This deck was in serious need of a facelift

First the old finish was removed with Storm deck stripper.

After finish has been removed a neutralizer/brighter is applied. This neutralizes the stripper, removes dead wood fibers, and restores proper PH levels to the wood.

Next deck is given time to dry and then sanded.  Sanding removes the raised grain.

Before staining, deck needs to dry 48 hours. Moisture content should be between 10-14%  Now for the fun part…… Time to stain. On this deck we used Sikkens Cetol SRD Stain  Color used was “Butternut”

The end result is a revitalized deck with a new finish.

If you are in need of deck staining & refinishing services in the Vancouver Washington area, call Northwest Painting at 360-225-7427 to set up an appointment for a free estimate.

When choosing a painter for your project, it can be a bit overwhelming. Paint contractors are a dime a dozen. Finding a good painter is not so easy.

Prices can vary quite a bit. Quite often the consumer will simply look for the lowest price. More often than not, they may very well be comparing apples to oranges.

Not all paint jobs are equal. Not by a long shot. When you receive your estimate, take a good look at the scope of work. A good painting estimate will be detailed. How many coats? What products will be used? What procedures will be done during prep? Will the painter be covering and protecting anything that needs to be keep clean. Will the painter put up paint samples prior to starting? Is there a warranty? There is quite a bit to take into consideration.

At Northwest Painting we take a great amount of pride in all our jobs. We go the extra mile on prep work. We take the time to cover anything that isn't supposed to be painted. We use premium products, and we do two coats. We provide a 5 year warranty on exteriors.

If you're seeking a painting estimate in the Vancouver/SW Washington area, call Northwest Painting Inc @ 360-225-7427 for an estimate.

People ask can aluminum gutters be painted? The answer is yes. Latex paint holds up just fine on gutters. Any quality acrylic latex paint will hold up just fine.

First they will need to be cleaned. Pressure washer or a by hand with a mild soap and a scrub brush. Rinse soap and allow to dry. Do not paint in direct sun. Paint will set up to quickly show lap marks and will not look right.

Northwest Painting has painted exteriors of homes all over the Vancouver Washington area. We prefer to use a DTM paint. (Direct to metal) The reason we choose this product is it’s a waterbourne enamel. DTM is fast drying and dries hard. When dry, it lays down and leaves smoother and more durable finish then ordinary house paint. DTM also has excellent color retention. After painting many gutters over the years, we have found this product gives us great results.

Gutters can be painted by brush, roller or spray application. Spraying often requires masking depending on the situation and roof will need to be shielded to protect shingles from overspray. Brushing is probably the easiest and most common method. Always finish with final strokes going from dry to wet to avoid brush and lap marks. We prefer to roll our gutters. This method has given us the best results. Rolling leaves a smooth and consistant finish with no brush marks. With this nethod, you must move fast and know how to apply just the right amount with the proper sized roller cover to avoid roller stipple. When rolled properly, the gutters will look like they were sprayed when dry.

Spring has arrived in Vancouver Washington!.

Northwest Painting Inc recently completed doing the finish on a knotty pine trim package on a job in Vancouver Washington.

The job consisted of a new trim package with knotty pine doors, door frames, trim around windows, and baseboards. Product used was Rudd Pre-Catalyzed Satin Lacquer.

Two coats of lacquer sanding sealer were applied followed by two coats of satin lacquer

All woodwork was sanded between coats and putty was mixed to match wood tone.

Walls were primed and first coated before trim installation.

After trim was installed, walls were masked off before lacquer was sprayed

After completion of lacquer, we unmasked and final coat was brushed and rolled on walls. Priming and doing a first coat on walls prior to trim insallation helps to leave a perfect cut in job when complete

We really enjoyed working on this project. The knotty pine has a beautiful and distinct look when finished.
